8 Ways Ignoring Social Media is Hurting Your Business

By Laura Donovan

Social Media Marketing used to be a great way to reach even more people after initially using traditional methods. It was a terrific adjunct to direct mail, print ads, TV commercials, etc.

However, marketing and advertising have changed dramatically. Social Media is not an adjunct anymore, it is now the standard for all marketing and advertising strategies. Print ads and other marketing techniques are now the adjunct to Social Media.

Though there are so many businesses that are not using Social Media at all or not using it correctly. Many don’t understand the power this tool has or the absolute necessity using it has become.

In fact, not using Social Media regularly, consistently, and professionally may be harming your business and affecting its growth and success.

Here are 8 ways not having a Social Strategy will hurt your business.

1. Your competitors are using it.

Whether you are a local or national business, selling a product or service it is likely your competitors are using Facebook and the other platforms to promote their business. If you see your competitors on the sites when you use them or if you see that your competitors are promoting their Social Sites offline, it is likely they have an active presence with a large audience. Most likely reaching your potential customers before you can reach them.

You are basically giving your business to your competition if you aren’t there too.

2. Your competitors are targeting your customers.

Facebook Advertising offers a great feature to target a precise group of people, including your competitor’s customers. Using a special code on your website you can then track people out on the internet who search for specific keywords and even people who visit specific websites (like your competitor’s sites) and have your ads directed to these people.

It’s likely your competitors are directing their ads right at your customers. All it takes is one special offer to get your customers to buy from them. (Are you secure enough in your customers’? Do you have enough customers to not worry about losing any to your competition?)

3. You still rely on SEO Experts to “Optimize” Your Website.

Social Signals contribute to Google Search Rank. No more website keyword stuffing or hiring SEO Experts to work their optimization magic. Social Media now sends more traffic to websites than internet searches

You can optimize your website all you want, but if you don’t have a Social Plan you will never be fully optimized.

4. You are still spending too much on traditional marketing and advertising.

It does not cost a lot to advertise on Social Media. Facebook ads are still relatively low (though with the influx of businesses now using the platform to advertise this may change very soon.) Our clients regularly see their ad cost per view under one cent and cost per click is typically under $1.00.

5. You aren’t taking advantage of the branding and visibility benefits it provides.
