One of Crayola’s most iconic crayons is officially retired. Ahead of National Crayon Day on Friday, Crayola took to social media to announce that Dandelion yellow will no longer be part of the classic 24-pack.

“Surprise! Our beloved Dandelion had a case of wanderlust and decided to announce his retirement early!” Crayola wrote in an Instagram caption Thursday afternoon. The announcement was originally supposed to be made Friday through a Facebook live stream in Times Square. Coloring connoisseurs were invited to share their favorite colors on social media in the hopes that it would be saved. Ultimately, Dandelion’s adventurous spirit just couldn’t be contained to a single box of crayons.

Of course, the announcement of Dandelion’s retirement had some feeling very blue. “What?! Dandelion is the yellow I use for everything,” one user wrote on Facebook. “Why are we retiring colors? This is the stupidest thing ever. Are we slumping in sales and this is just a ploy to get people to buy more?” Others hoped that, given the timing, it was simply an April Fool’s Day prank.

This is, however, not the first time a crayon was retired. The Today Show reports that Prussian blue, Permanent Magenta and English Vermilion, which made their debuts in the original 1903 lineup, have since been removed from the box as well. Dandelion is the first color to be retired in nearly 15 years, though.

The new color will be announced Friday morning on Facebook.
